Chalk Day With Friends

My list to do today was beyond long.  We are headed out of town for the weekend to stay with friends and attend a wedding.  It is just myself and the kids traveling, but there is still a ton to do--like finishing her dress, exchanging her new shoes, packing...you get the idea.

But, today there were having a "chalk day" at the library, and Gracie really wanted to go.

I am the one who put it on the calendar, but I am feeling the pressure of the time crunch. I let my mind relent figuring a little while couldn't hurt and they need to do something fun today.

So, we raced out of the house and got there just in time.

The kids had found a shady spot and had their colors of chalk chosen.  Thomas was working steadily on his "town truck" picture and Gracie was taking her time creating Rapunzel and her very long hair.

When Gracie looked up from her painstaking detail her eyes landed on best third grade buddy Clara.

Clara and her brother and mom had all come to the library for chalk day too.

Gracie was so surprised and happy.

The girls chatted and drew and giggled, and I was instantly glad we came, and the great to-do list faded from my mind and I watched Gracie really smile-- possibly for the first time since school ended.

I let the kids play for a while, and Clara's mom and I exchanged numbers and hopefully we can plan another play date for the girls soon.

It is all too easy to forget to take time and play and relax and enjoy the day when you are consumed by lists, and need-to-do's and chores and so many more things that find their way to the forefront of your mind and rob you of really, truly enjoying the day that the Lord hath made.

Thankfully, for a brief morning--we did remember.
