Bracelets With Gracie

Ah, memories.

I remember that making friendship bracelets in upper Elementary school (mostly 5th grade) was the thing that every girl was doing at every chance she could throughout the school day.

How fitting, and neat, that Gracie and her friends seem to be carrying on the tradition.

Of course her bracelets do no involve embroidery thread which she would have to beg, borrow or steal from her mom's collection.  They are made of rubber bands. But, clearly possess all the fun and obsession that they did in my era as well.

Gracie was intent on showing me how to make these bracelets, now that she had learned.  Apparently Sarah in her class started the trend and they formed some sort of club. Well, Gracie was frustrated because she couldn't figure it out.  She came home last week with one proudly on her wrist, so excited that she finally "got it." I asked her about the bands, and she said that girls share.  Well, we needed to share now too, so this mama went to A.C. Moore and bought a 600 pack for the girls and their "club," with the rules that they can only be made when teacher says it is okay; like recess or breaks.

So, I sat down with my very excited daughter and we each made a rubber band bracelet.

It seemed kind of silly in the moment, but looking back, it was a wonderful sharing time with her--just us girls. She seems so foreign to me as these days and months and years pass. I do not seem to make much effort any more, and I am angry with myself for that--and glad for sitting at the kitchen table tonight and getting a small glimpse into her "world."
