Second Advent Week

We were out of town for the first Sunday in advent, so we doubled up tonight.  Thomas is old enough now to help light the candles with his big sisters help, and I think he really felt special.

Each year we do the candles, and we have since Gracie was very young.  In the beginning I made my own "wreath," but when Gracie was about 4 our dear friends the Mozingo's gave us this beautiful permanent wreath that we love to pull out every year.

I always find Bible verses to go with our lighting tradition, this year I am using the kids version from Upper Room's "Pockets" to go along with our weeks. It has great kid-friendly wording so Gracie can read it and Thomas can understand.

A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse;
    from his roots a Branch will bear fruit.
The Spirit of the Lord will rest on him—
    the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding,
    the Spirit of counsel and of might,
    the Spirit of the knowledge and fear of the Lord
and he will delight in the fear of the Lord.
He will not judge by what he sees with his eyes,
    or decide by what he hears with his ears;

Isaiah 11: 1-10

  1. I like this idea! We've lit the Advent candle at church as a family in the past, but Bryce has never heard the meaning behind all the candles. Maybe we'll start a new tradition next year!
